An official letter of complaint from the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) was issued to a local club night for using controversial imagery.
Promoters of student-run club night “Spread Your Legs”, which takes place at Northern Quarter nightclub The Ruby Lounge, hoped to promote the event using flyers bearing the face of Queen Elizabeth II next to an image of a lion drawn with genatalia.
The ASA stated: “The use of the Queen’s image and the reference to the Queen in [the advertising flyer] would clearly not be approved by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office.
“We also consider that referring to the Queen in a sexual context might cause serious or widespread offence.”
Toby Baker, organiser of the club night, said he did not regret the advert. “Spread Your Legs aims to be the most liberal night in Manchester; anything goes.
“The city needs some more alternative band nights that think outside the box. It’s all tongue in cheek and I refuse to apologise.”
The event had already been the target of complaints last month from the Catholic Chaplaincy for use of bishop costumes in its promotion. Feminist groups were also outraged regarding the sexual connotations of the event name.
Students’ Union Women’s Officer Jennie Killip said: “The problem we had was that it was specifically women being told to ‘spread your legs’.
“It was a blatant objectification of women and demonstrates the systematic way that clubs are projected. It suggests what will be expected of women at clubs.”
The team behind Spread Your Legs will nevertheless be playing music at this summer’s Pangaea festival hosted at the Union.
