Her Romeo, Directed by Rachel Fernandez-Arias and Abi Hynes

by Zara Macgregor

Her Romeo is overall a refreshing retelling of Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. Rich in music and dance, it allowed the cast to showcase their talents in this story of true love, pride, honesty and the impact of generational divides.
The first half follows the structure of Shakespeare’s well-known play, with a slant that utilises techniques of modern dance and music. However, at times, I found the music contradictory and subverting the actors’ talents; dramatic moments were often shattered by the modern music blasting from behind, the lyrics chosen were often highly disconnected from the script.
The second half of the play was a well thought out twist on the original, opening with the powerful “There are no star-crossed lovers in today’s youth”. The directors selected original extracts of Shakespeare’s play to successfully demonstrate that perhaps fate and destiny are merely excuses, that instead one makes one’s own fate through decisions and influences.

Particular performances were of a very high standard. Hannah More played not only a beautiful and strong-willed Juliet, but also displayed a great sense of humour, while the swaggeringly confident portrayal of Mercutio was effective and light hearted. The nurse was similarly impressive, combining the funny, bawdy and maternal into her teasing and concern.
While the directors’ innovative ideas were sometimes miscalculated, the play overall was interesting to watch, effective and a brave adaptation.
