The writing debut of first-year Drama student Miran Hadzic, Door Slam Shut is a Pinter-esque play that deals with the meaning of life.
On a bare stage and with minimalist dialogue, we meet Elvis as he wakes up in a non-descript room with no idea of why he is there. Unnerved and confused, an articulate philosopher-type called Mate engages him in conversation. The dialogue is witty, with some great one-liners, but after the entrance of the third unexplained character, the masculine and somewhat aggressive Goran, I was left wondering where it was all going. After much entertaining beating around the bush, the answer seemed to come with the Goran’s aggressive “The one thing we can be sure of in life is death” and the realisation that the three characters were waiting to off and fight in a war into which they had been supernaturally conscripted.
The performances were of a high standard, particularly that of Anil Douglas. However, on the whole, the play was frustrating. A lot of the action took place at the edges of the stage and was difficult to see; similarly, each character was called to face an unknown battle outside the room. The production was a vicious cycle of bewilderment, concluding with the introduction of a new character to state the poignant last line: “Where am I?”
If you prefer clearly defined characters and closed narratives, then the performance will disappoint; if however you believe that a play’s purpose is to convey the playwright’s perspective of the world, then Door Slam Shut is a resounding success.
