For many a year now the high school movie has existed as something of a guilty pleasure within our cinematic diet. But to hell with the guilt, high school films are there to be loved, and rightly so! Ever since Porky’s graced the silver screen and ignited the genre, high school movies have given us characters that we can love in our dark and greasy days of uncontrollable teenage lust and insecurity; movies that remind us we are not alone. To help us all embrace the high school flick, here’s a tribute to five of the finest.
American Pie
The hallmark of the genre, Sean William Scott’s finest outing deserves the top spot because it’s just plain hilarious. I for one based much of my high school career on the teachings of the Stiffmeister and I still look back with a grin. Incidentally though, I’ve taken to avoiding experimentation with home baking… at least when the parents are around.
The Breakfast Club
Although these days it adornes the cult mantelpiece, its high school movie roots should not be forgotten. Any girl who can work a lipstick like that gets my vote, and that little “titbit” is only one of the small moments that make this film a classic.
Porky’s
The godfather of the high school flick, this is the one that, for me, started it all. Amid racial feuds and pot-bellied Floridian Pimps, the comic moments of this film will leave your sides in shreds… and certainly make you think twice about that whole fly–on-the-wall fantasy about the girls’ shower room.
Ten Things I Hate About You
Following his incredible swansong in The Dark Knight, it’s hard to think that the debut of the late Heath Ledger took place in the flick forever nestled at the heart of the high school genre. This is the one for which female hearts the world over will remember him. Blokes on the other hand are indebted to Mr Ledger and this film forever for coming up with the concept of “beer flavoured nipples”… What. A. God.
Superbad
Seth Rogan’s supreme calling card is without question the greatest high school movie to emerge in the last couple of years. Spinning the typical hilarity as three young heroes go on a quest to lose their virginity, this film is everything a high school movie should be. Remember, deep down, we are ALL McLovin!
