WHAT? NO folk-infused melodies? No synth-lines more spaced out than God’s omnipresence? Woah… this must be a different band, terrifying Latin titles aside…
No my friend, not quite; PRR have evolved. While The Dark Third was a folk-infused prog-indie affair, most of the tracks from AVO could probably feature on a DJ’s set, if the punters were into this sort of thing.
The acoustic sections have been replaced with spasmodic synthesisers, and with riffs dirtier than a coal mine pumped full of salmonella and dung, AVO sounds pretty much like a cross between a happy Porcupine Tree (Deadwing era) mixed with NIN (but not aimed at wrist-slitting 13-year-olds). ‘Victorious Cupid’, for example, wanders into the former’s territory; ‘Deus Ex Machina’ and ‘The Gloaming’ feature synthesised grooves sexy enough to make a 1980s vacuum cleaner get up and dance, then ram itself into the nearest wall (vacuum cleaners aren’t the best moshers).
There are continuities between this and the band’s debut, though. The Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies feature quite heavily. You could even play a game of “spot the lifted melody” – ‘Keep Me Sane’s melody starts sounding annoyingly similar to the band’s earlier ‘Bullitts Dominæ’ before smashing you in the face with enough distortion to put Kerry King to shame.
Rock, metal, IDM, techno… AVO skilfully skips over most genre classifications. With its interesting song structures and various influences, it’s modern-progressive rock in all its glory. It’s ambitious, but not so over-the-top that it only appeals to a couple of nerds who worship Tales from Topographic Oceans and nothing else. If you ever wished that ‘Mama’ by Genesis had been heavier and with less Phil Collins, or you are a vacuum cleaner, then grab this album with both hands, hug it all the way home, and play it until the files unravel. Purchase again, and repeat.
