The NO2ID campaign has overlooked the widespread benefits of ID cards and the necessity of having them for the safety of our society. Chair of Manchester Labour Students Mike Joslin will be the first in line to get one.
Every time I listen to someone argue against identity cards, the first thing they say is that they are a fundamental constriction of their liberty. If you can name me one single way in which ID cards restrict the liberty of the law-abiding citizens of this country then I will surrender my values and put down my rhetorical arms. But you can’t, simply because there isn’t one.
Does an ID card restrict your right to live your life as you choose? No. Does it restrict your right to freedom of speech and association? No. Does it restrict your right to work or to enjoy your spare time in the way you want to? No. Nor does it restrict your right to go to school, seek hospital treatment, claim a pension or access public services.
However, if you are a criminal or a terrorist seeking to drag down our society then it’s damn right that an ID card be used to restrict your ability to move freely and damn right that it gives the police the means to apprehend you.
There is a clear and present need for a consolidated form of ID card in the UK. With the number of bail absconders rising, rampant identity fraud, terrorism posing a real danger in our daily lives and the need for more effective public service provision, it is absolutely right that a system of ID cards is introduced and I proudly support them.
What’s that I hear you say? You don’t want one? Most students like to go out to nightclubs or bars in the evening, I know I do. Surely, by the logic of anti-ID card campaigners, it is an outrage that to get into most licensed establishments one must show a form of identity card with proof of your age? But these same campaigners don’t object or complain about this, they respect the fact that the law must be enforced and that by showing their card, citizens of legal age can go about their business in peace. Students don’t object to carrying a library card to prove their right to access facilities. Drivers don’t object to carrying a driver’s license to prove their right to drive a car. Workers don’t object to carrying a National Insurance Card to prove their right to work. So surely, if you don’t object to any of the aforementioned items, an ID card simply to prove you are abiding by the law is right.
The prohibitive cost of ID cards is a fallacy propagated by anti-ID card campaigners as a cheap blow that avoids the crux of the debate. ID cards will cost the state nothing. Why? Because it is becoming a requirement of foreign governments, such as the USA, that our passports contain biometrics so that our citizens will be granted entry. The cost involved in the ID cards program is embedded in the cost of upgrading our passport system and the cost of purchasing ID cards will be passed onto the citizens, as owning one is voluntary. I do not believe the prohibitive cost is an effective argument in itself anyway as it does not explain why the introduction of such a system would be wrong. I would argue that ID cards should be made compulsory and free for all citizens for them to be truly effective.
It says something about the quality of the anti-ID card argument that a writer for this newspaper argued that ID cards are a greater threat to our society than the BNP. I am very sorry, but fascists that argue for homosexuals to be killed, deny the holocaust, call for Muslims to be banned from planes and for all non-white people to be forcibly removed from this country are an abomination and must be fought on every street corner they lurk, in every town they populate and every city in which they stand for election. I understand ID cards are controversial, but I believe very passionately that they are needed to revolutionise public service provision in this country, increase the detection and apprehension rate of wanted criminals, protect our society from terrorist atrocities and ensure that those that use our public services are entitled to use them. If you can prove to me that ID cards restrict people’s liberty then I will eat my words and walk around with a NO2ID badge. Until then, I will be the first to buy one.

The Government’s arguments for ID cards do not soften the blow they will inflict on our privacy. UMSU Campaigns Officer Daniel Lee believes they are the first step to a total breach of human rights.
Governments have wanted to bring ID cards back for decades. British people flat-out refused to cooperate with having them after the Second World War, but over the years they have been seen as an attractive way of keeping the population in check. After all, not long ago it was the Tories looking into the idea with Labour opposing. Then the “War on Terror” started.
Why does the Government think we need them? They argue the cards will be essential for stopping terrorists using multiple identities, ignoring the fact that Spain, which has ID cards, suffers the most terrorist attacks in Europe and that our most recent atrocity, which took place on July 7th 2005, was undertaken by people with perfectly valid identity documents. A revealing look at someone who believes this argument can be seen in a recent letter printed in the MEN: “It will be the critics who will be responsible for some terrible terrorist attacks in this country just because of their pathetic human rights beliefs.”
They say that ID cards will stop benefit fraud. More benefits go unclaimed than are claimed fraudulently. Spending up to £20bn on ID cards to tackle this doesn’t really seem to add up. Oh yes, the cost. The Government is notoriously dishonest with its figures, and the above estimate is the most realistic. Not to mention the £100 price of on the card itself, and a £2,500 fine if you forget to tell them you changed address, which us students tend to do quite a bit.
Identity theft is a common theme, and yet these cards are only likely to exacerbate it. 300,000 people at a MINIMUM are going to be able to view the database listing all of our details. Data mining is already rife in all databases, but this one will be the crown jewel for those seeking to profit. The cards can be read from a distance away by anyone able to construct a rudimentary device – not to mention the amount of data being leaked daily by the Government and recently by our own university.
The Government is now billing them as an overtly expensive “convenience measure”, especially for students. Don’t believe this. They will in fact make normal things harder to do. In a wider sense, these cards were never intended to be voluntary and they won’t be. Irrespective of any vote in Parliament, it will eventually be impossible to get a student loan, bank account, most contracts, or even graduate, without a card. This is deception, plain and simple.
Many international students have been deceived into not worrying because their home countries have the cards. Here’s the difference: our system will be the most intrusive, and wide ranging, thanks to the National Identity Register pooling together information from almost all sources. Germany has ID cards but our system would be illegal there. Almost all European nations with cards brought them in under fascism: they were used to advance the horrors of Nazi Germany and to help identify enemies in Rwanda. We never know who will have control over our information, and with the Act allowing for even more data to be collected and the BNP lurking, we can’t afford to be so lenient with it.
Everything about this project is deceitful and ill thought-out. They’re taking it group by group to soften up the population. International students have barely any representation and no voting power, so they’re the first. Soon it will be all students, and we also barely have any representation thanks to an ineffectual national union. The effects on international students haven’t been thought through, bringing major implications for getting visas and forcing long treks to the nearest processing centre in Liverpool. Many international students will start to be deterred from studying here due to the difficulties, which will have a massive negative effect on the cultural and financial aspects of campuses. Even our own Vice-Chancellor, Alan Gilbert, has said he is “deeply worried”.
A common response is the “nothing to hide” argument. When has “nothing to hide” been a justification for a multibillion-pound project? If that’s the case, ID cards are at best arbitrary. Privacy is valued for a reason – it’s a fundamental human right. It’s also the first right to be eroded under a totalitarian regime, and that’s why we must protect it.
There is always need for an outlet to express opposition. Anyone at any peaceful protest in recent years will have seen increased surveillance and disruption from police. ID cards are one of a number of measures trying to shut down such opposition, just as they were able to in Orwell’s ‘1984’.
