THE ROOTS: “one of the greatest live acts in the world”, according to Rolling Stone. So with Philadelphia’s finest only playing two UK dates, no wonder the diverse Academy crowd is fired up.
The Roots swagger playfully onstage and unleash a lengthy but relentlessly energetic set, complete with a sousaphone and hilariously choreographed dance routines. Their varied instrumentation really sets them apart as a live spectacle, and while Questlove’s drumming interlude would smack of self indulgence in many hip hop acts, here it’s exhilarating and increases the already manic energy level.
One slight gripe: for a group with such a stunning back catalogue, recent album Rising Down features a bit too highly and that album’s ‘Get Busy’ falls flat. All the same, it’s impossible not to be won over by such a mesmerising show. Classics such ‘You Got Me’ and the distinctly old school ‘Proceed’ even things out, while ‘The Seed’ makes the encore a thrilling finale. At the end, The Roots sign numerous items of clothing, and chuck drumsticks to the enthusiastic crowd. Their lofty reputation is very much intact.
