The Gaslight Anthem @ Academy 2, 04/02/09

by Tom Jirat

Returning for a second sold-out gig in as many months, New Jersey’s Gaslight Anthem provided an unforgettable night of punk/soul/blues/rock to a capacity crowd in Academy 2.  Ranging from singles such as ‘Old White Lincoln’ and second album title track ‘The ’59 Sound’, to less well known tunes such as the thundering ‘Wooderson’, each song The Gaslight Anthem exhibited during their 80 minutes on stage was ravenously devoured by those in attendance.

Every number was played with raw passion, energy and infectious enthusiasm as The Gaslight Anthem exhibited the diversity of their back catalogue, ranging from anthemic punk rock to melodious, soulful blues. The encore, featuring the crowd favourite ‘Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts’, capped a magnificent set matched by the band’s stage presence, which was second to none.

Throw in support slots from Polar Bear Club and Frank Turner – both of which were good enough to be headlining in their own right – and you have a night of entertainment nobody will forget in a hurry.

Rating: 4 1/2 stars
