Bella McShane investigates if gap years are package holidays in a more exotic box…with extra mud.
Every A-level graduate is confronted with the daunting question of what next? At 18, this seems like the most important decision in your life. The reality of being plunged headfirst into university, full of mature, academic, career-minded people seems akin to being deserted in the middle of the Sahara. A gap year offers a chance to grow, truly discover who one is as an individual and meet people from cultures and backgrounds that have only been observed from ivory towers and have yet to be confronted in reality. Or perhaps gap years have become exactly what it says on the tin: a pause in your life used to avoid doing anything of substance.
The average gap year student maystill crave the exotic and the unknown but it may be more realistic to view this year as yet another means to prolong the inevitability of having to get on the career ladder. The aim may be to come back a more enriched, worldly, mature individual but most will have simply become experts at downing shots and skinny-dipping.
The origin of the gap year concept came in the decade following the Second World War, when youth travel and cultural exchange was discussed among governments as a useful tool to create a better global understanding, to prevent future world wars. The modern gap year pioneers came in the form of Tom Griffiths and Peter Pedrick, who brought the gap year market onto the web in 1998 with the launch of gapyear.com. In July 2005, Mintel Gap Year Reports show an astonishing market valued £2.2bn from British youths travelling through other countries, and a global total of £5bn.
Even among the mayhem of the credit crisis, the gap year industry is the fastest-growing travel sector of the millennium; predictions are that the global gap year market will grow to around £11bn by 2010. Most students seem to accept that regardless of the current economic situation, this boom will continue. Some suggest there will be a rise in students taking gap years to delay going into the work environment and accumulating masses of student debt.
Cynics might believe that all gap year students just crave an extended package holiday. Yet there are still students who take gap years to immerse themselves in an alien culture and experience the exotic or help those in developing countries. One University of Manchester student, Chris Roberts, built houses in Papua New Guinea. He found this an invaluable opportunity and said it enabled him to get more out of university afterwards.
There is a wealth of opportunity to contribute to other communities and gain experiences that university cannot provide. This can vary from teaching English, to animal conservation and helping orphans, all of which are praiseworthy causes and surely deserving of respect. Gap year-takers who do these kind of activities are doing more than the average person is able to do. Although they are by no means changing the world, they are making a contribution, which is more than most students who have not taken a gap year can say.
But let us take a step back into reality. How many middle class gap year students are taking a year off out of the goodness of their hearts? How many have a deep seated desire to transform the world and help those in need? Perhaps it would be more accurate to see these opportunities as one large CV-booster. There aren’t many things that look better to prospective employers than helping a small African community build a hospital. Alfie Bown, a third year History student, terms this “false charity”, which merely adds to the absurdity of taking a gap year. Yet without the cynicism, it may be that the motives for these decisions don’t really matter. A good deed remains just that, even behind a cloud of self-interest.
Gap years are often said to be the time for true self-discovery. Alan Arthur, a third year student, agrees that gap years are a time to learn “more about yourself”. The academic race that all students have been running since the start of secondary school leaves little time to achieve any sort of perspective. Students’ lives up until 18 seem to have been one test after another, and in the difficult adolescent years, the person we are seems to have been thrust upon us by our education. Gap years may well be a time to see the wider picture and remove ourselves from the rat race (for a year at least).
Emma Agnew explained how the high pressure nature of her school definitely put her off going straight to university. She decided to jet across the world by herself, an extremely daunting prospect, and plunge herself head first into South American culture. She spent the majority of her time off the beaten track and speaking only Spanish, and rather than having work pre-arranged by a gap year company, she organised everything herself once she arrived. This undoubtedly taught her life lessons that her strict Edinburgh education never could have. As a result, she arrived at university a more well-rounded and open minded individual.
Many people perceive the year as a once-in–a-lifetime opportunity. Despite not taking a gap year herself, Kate Cellan-Jones said that many people do so because it is the only time in their lives when they feel they can take time out. The appeal of spending a year experiencing the unfamiliar, discovering yourself and helping others is all very alluring to a teenager fresh out of school. The commonly-held view that after university real life must begin and everything up until that point has merely been childs’ play encourages people to avoid university. The gap year is also a unique opportunity to decide those all important questions, such as “What do I want to do when I grow up?” Gap years are an opportunity to gain a certain level of perspective about life that submerging yourself in text books simply cannot achieve.
Yet Alfie Bown commented that gap years were an excuse for people to “seem cultured” and appear “pseudo-spiritual”, saying that in fact they are nothing but a year to truly avoid reality and hard work. Many people said that students they met in the first few weeks of university who had taken gap years had an air of superiority about them, presuming they were instantly wiser because of their six months away from the UK.
There is a growing consensus that the integrity of gap years is dwindling. Exploring the unexplored, or helping the helpless is being replaced by full moon parties, bungee jumping and perhaps, as Sophie James, a History and Screen Studies student remarked, it is just an opportunity to “have a jolly”. Some students suggested that as gap years have become the norm for a lot of people, they have rapidly lost their appeal.
Perhaps it speaks volumes that most people do choose the STA travel package, the routine merry-go-round of Thailand, then Australia and New Zealand (doing the odd sky dive and perhaps meet a strapping local hick), then jet across to America for a final shopping trip in New York with the leftover funds. Perhaps the gap year has just become synonymous with a holiday.
Another worrying trend that comes with this rapid rise in backpackers is the impact on the countries themselves. Thailand seems the most prominent example of where it can all go wrong. The southern islands and large cities are littered with McDonald’s, pale British tourists and buckets and buckets of alcohol. Alan Arthur stated that visiting Thailand, fast becoming the Asian Zante, on a gap year is a waste and those that visit countries such as Australia and America will not receive the “shock” that he believes is mandatory on any fulfilling gap year. Kate Cellan-Jones agreed that there will be long term damage to the countries themselves and that such jaunts will inevitably cause a destruction of culture as Thailand is rapidly becoming a commercial centre.
A walk down the backpackers’ Mecca in Bangkok, Khao San Road, , is a physical representation of the damage the Western influence can have on the integrity of other cultures. As you saunter past Burger King, you can purchase an array of delights such as fishermen’s trousers, useful for hot humid weather (clearly a must-have back in balmy England). You will then find yourself perched in one of the many bars, all with flat screen televisions airing the latest football match and buckets of alcohol for 200 Baht (that is about £3). It is possible to sit and observe the amazing culture and feel exotic amongst the other British tourists, while no trip to the Khoa San Road is complete without seeing someone from university. Oh, what culture..
But, let us not presume that it is all doom and gloom. The economies of these countries have received a massive injection of wealth. Tourism makes a larger contribution to Thailand’s economy (typically about 6% of the GDP) than to any other Asian nation. Thailand still remains an exotic experience. By moving off the well-trodden track it may be possible to discover sides to the country believed to be long dead and buried, which is exactly what many tourism agencies are encouraging gap year students to do, recommending places such as the beautiful “Golden Triangle” area in the north.
There is also a growing trend in people taking gap years after university. Regardless of the mountain of debt looming over the average graduate, it seems overzealous to pursue a career after being mentally exhausted for three years (well, in the third year anyway) and physically drained (drinking and socialising sure are tiring). With a degree firmly under your belt, the opportunities after university seem more enticing and with three years’ more knowledge of life, perhaps it is possible to get more out of this period. However, we must not forget those indulgent few, who are rapidly becoming the majority, who believe a gap year before and after is the norm. Maybe they will consider employment come their 40th birthday.
Nonetheless, very rarely does someone come back regretting their year. Most people who jetted around the world said that in the first few months of university it is drastically noticeable that they were more confident and wise than those who came straight from school. But, as the years have gone on, and university draws to a close, is it possible that those who took a year off are just one year older but none the wiser?
